Handbag Accessories

A roomy, high-quality handbag is a key purchase for spring/summer 2007. Slouchy shapes of butter-soft leather in extra-large variations of the hobo, shoulder bag and satchel have an irresistible, highly sensual softness.  Not only do these oversize shapes look fresh and now; they have the added bonus of providing plenty of room to tote along all of life's essentials and then some. These handbags make a statement and noticeably update a wardrobe.

After a fall/winter season in which black was once again the "it" color in apparel and accessories, black is often seen in combination with white, and white looks fresh worn all on its own. However, the signature hues for spring 2007 are gentle blonde neutrals. Shades of softness ranging from ivory, cream and off-white into camel and butterscotch, beige and brown provide a delicious palette.

This often takes the form of crochet or macramé techniques, painted or perforated leather, or patchwork designs, accented with chunky hardware. Many of these designs have a costume-y bohemian feel to them, best worn by a creative personality.

Significant variety in ornamentation can be found, including such details as woven leathers, grommets and whipstitched edges, the refinement of which determines the relative formality or casual appearance of the bags. Decorated straps are a stylish detail on many bags, and cross-body straps, excellent for hands-free utility, are making a comeback.

Look for a bag that is worn close to the body for optimal flattering effect.  A handbag such as a bucket-style bag with a wide bottom will stand out farther from the body and look bulkier, less sleek. Depending upon your body shape, a shoulder bag that sits near the waist may be more flattering than one that sits at the widest point of the hips.

Along with the width of the bag, pay attention to its overall shape. If your body is more triangular, with hips wider than shoulders, a bag with a noticeably narrower top and wider bottom will repeat your shape and emphasize it.  That same bag, however, may emphasize the small waist of the woman with an hourglass figure. Handbags, like all accessories, should always be chosen to flatter the wearer.
